Admissions Overview

We seek intellectually curious, academically competitive 7th-grade students from the Greater Newark Area with strong character, community-mindedness, and a drive to excel in a college-preparatory boarding school environment.

Candidates should have solid academic records, active engagement in extracurriculars, and qualities such as self-motivation, empathy, and a sense of community.


Our Recruitment Team visits schools, churches, and community organizations across the Greater Newark Area. While most students come from Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, and Union counties, any student within an hour’s drive of Newark, New Jersey, is welcome to apply.

Please note, the maximum allowable combined family income is $250,000 per year.

Students entering 6th grade or lower are welcome to submit an inquiry form to stay connected, but official applications are reserved exclusively for the 7th-grade year.

Profile of a Competitive 7th-Grade Applicant

Students who thrive in our program typically demonstrate:

  • Strong Academic Performance — Mostly A’s and B’s

  • Eligibility — U.S. citizen or permanent resident

  • Competitive Standardized Test Scores

  • Active Involvement — Extracurricular activities in school or the community

  • Strong Character — Leadership, responsibility, and a commitment to others

Tips for Strengthening Your Application

Our application process is comprehensive, and each student who becomes a Wight Foundation Scholar receives dedicated support throughout and beyond their high school years.

Students and parents should complete all required parts of the application thoroughly and honestly.

To ensure the most thoughtful review, we encourage early submission. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis as they arrive in our office.
